The first field trial was conducted from September of 1995 to July of 1999 and the second field trial was conducted from September of 1996 to July of 1999. The objective of the first trial was to investigate the effect of sowing date on the yield formation of winter triticale cultivars Modus and Dato in comparison with winter wheat cv. Sirvinta (Lithuania) and rye cv. Vambo (Jogeva). The goal of the second trial was to investigate the effects of seeding rates from 200 up to 700 seeds m (-2) and nitrogen rates from 0 up to 136 kg N ha (-1) on the yield structure and formation of winter triticale cv. Modus. Of all yield components the number of ear-bearing tillers m (-2), the number and weight of kernel ear (-1) had the greatest influence on yield formation. The suitable sowing date for winter triticale in Estonian agroclimatic conditions was the first decade of September. The optimal seeding rates were up to 400 viable seeds m (-2) and suitable nitrogen rate was 102 kg N ha (-1). High seeding rates and nitrogen rates increased lodging of winter triticale Modus in moisture conditions in 1998. Only plots without nitrogen fertilizer did not lodging in 1998
