Late-maturing red clover 'Ilte' was introduced for state variety testing in 1989 and has been included in the Estonian Official Variety List since 1993. 'Ilte' is bred through individual and mass selections from the tetraploid material, which was obtained by colhicine treatment of germinated seeds. As a mean of five trials conducted at Jogeva, variety 'Ilte' has exceeded the yield of green mass of the standard variety 'Jogeva 205' by 21.3 per cent, 8.3 per cent by hay yield and 1.3 per cent by the crude protein content in dry matter. The average seed yield of two testing years on the variety 'Ilte' accounted for 326 kg/ha, on the standard variety 'Jogeva 205' 234 kg/ha. Early-maturing red clover 'Varte' was introduced for state variety testing in 1991 and has been included in the Estonian Official Variety List since 1995. 'Varte' is bred through individual and mass selections from tetraploid material, which was obtained by treating the germinated seeds of variety 'Jogeva 433' with colchine. From the mean of five trials conducted at Jogeva, variety 'Varte' has surpassed the control variety 'Jogeva 433' in the yield of green mass by 37.3 per cent, 21.7 per cent by yield of hay and 0.7 per cent by the crude protein content in dry matter. Mean seed yield of three testing years on the variety 'Varte' was 149 kg/ha, that of the control variety was 119 kg/ha. 'Ilte'and 'Varte' are productive red clover varieties, in which the dry matter content in the green mass is lower compared with the diploid varieties, the stems are thicker and the leaves bigger. As a result of this their green mass dries somewhat more slowly. Tetraploid varieties should be preferred in green mass, silage, dehydrates and leaf protein production
