Exploration of grape varieties at Raepina
2000
Kivistik, J. (Raepina Gardening College, Raepina(Estonia))
Very early European grape varieties have been cultivated here outdoors and against southern walls since 1937. Here have been studied hybrid varieties introduced from Latvia, Minnesota and other northern areas. There are over 70 varieties in the collection now. We have compiled data of about 17 varieties during three years: their time of ripening, size of a cluster, size of a berry, number of seeds in a berry. The most suitable for growing outdoors in Estonia are the earliest varieties bred in Russia as 'Hasaine Sladki', 'Jubilei Novgoroda', 'Alyoshenkin' and ones bred in Latvia as 'Sukribe', 'Guna', 'Zilga', 'Laeti Varajane'. Some varieties originating from Minnesota could be added to the list in future
