Recent pathogenic changes in the leaf (brown) rust pathogen of wheat and the crown rust pathogen of oats in Australia in relation to host resistance

Pathogenicity surveys of P.recondita f.sp.tritici and P. coronata f.sp.avenae from 1995 to 1999 detected several important changes in the pathogen populations. Pathotype 104-1, 2, 3, (6), (7), 9, 11, with virulence for Lr26, became widespread in NSW and southern Qld following initial detection in southern NSW in 1997. This pathotype caused moderate to severe rusting of irrigated crops of cultivar Triller, and resulted in the withdrawal from cultivation of cv Mawson, both of which possess Lr26. The occurence of three pathotypes with virulence for Lr17b was of significance for winter wheat cultivars with this gene.
