Cytoplex-Selenit is a dried culture of Saccaromyces cerevisiae containing Se 1000 mg/kg in the form of seleno-methionine.200 gilts and sows were supplemented with Cytoplex-Selenit 300 g/metric tonne to examine its effects on the onset of the breeding cycle of gilts, litter size of multiparous sows and viability, survival and growth rate of piglets and the occurence of periparturient disease.Se supplementation from 170 days of age did not influence the proportion of cyclic gilts compared with untreated controls. Two farrowings, 2 nursing periods and 2 service periods from weaning to service was followed up with 2 groups of 32 experimental and control sows. The experiment started 14 days prior to expected parturition and concluded when piglets of the 2nd farrowing had been weaned.
