Marker assisted selection in livestock.7th Paper:genes influencing muscle development in cattle, sheep and swine: myostatin, callipyge, myogenin
2000
Fésüs,L.
Several aspects of genes influencing muscular development in cattle, sheep and swine (myostatin, callipyge, myogenin) are discussed and the in vitro molecular genetic methods identifying these genes are reviewed.PCR-RFLP gene test is avaible to type most of the mutations of the myostatin gene, allowing the wide use of these mutations in practice. The mutant allele of the callipyge gene (CLPG) induces the callipyge phenotype in certain cases. The wide application of this phenomenon in practise is hampered by the meat quality problems (reduced tenderness).Preliminary results indicate the possible positive effects of some myogenin alleles on piglet birth weight, body weight gain, carcass weight and amount of lean meat in pigs. Some further studies are required to confirm the preliminary information.
