Use of resistance genes in varieties differ among countries and regions. This results in different selection forces acting on the pathogen populations, which again influences the effectiveness of host resistance genes used. We studied the consequences of local-cropping practices in France and Denmark, i.e. the use of powdery mildew resistance genes in autumn-sown and spring-sown crops, on the average fitness of the powdery mildew populations on the crops. We used the average fitness of the pathogen population to describe the effectiveness in controlling barley powdery mildew of resistance gene combinations present in that region, in autumn-sown and spring-sown crop, respectively.
