We have studied the effects of NaCl on speed of germination, seedling growth and degradation of storage component in wheat seeds. NaCl significantly reduced the speed of germination, seedling dry matter accumulation, and root and shoot length, on the other side, delayed reduction of seed storage component, especially storage carbohydrates. The effect of NaCl on ABA content and alpha-amylase expression was examined in wheat seeds. NaCl increased endogenous ABA content and inhibits the expression of alpha-amylase. The external application of gibberellic acid (GA3) showed to be improved the seedling growth and alpha-amylase expression in presence of NaCl. These results suggest that GA3 counteracts the stress conditions by enhancing the degradation of starch and alpha-amylase activity in seeds, which ultimately leads to better seedling growth
