The mechanism of the community differentiation of the beech [Fagus crenata] forests in the Hakone mountains [Japan]

We studied the forests composition and environmental factors of the beech forests in the Hakone mountains to clarify details of their compositional differentiation. Phytosociological classification using the Braun-Blanquet method indicated that the beech forests were identified to Corno-Fagetum crenatae, divided into 2 subassociations, 4 variants, and 6 subvariants. Using the DCA ordination technique, the score of AXIS 1 correlated most closely with geology and inclination of slope, thickness of soil, water content of soil, pH of soil, while the score of AXIS 2 correlated closely with blackness of soil. Analyzing the relation to the communities by Braun-Blanquet method with each cause. the differentiation of subassociations was corresponded to water content of soil and thickness of soil. The differentiation of variants was corresponded to pH of soil. The differentiation of subvariants corresponded to geology and blackness of soil
