From 3 cases of bovine mastitis showing severe mammary swelling and hardening as well as discharge of a lot of small clots in the milk Prototheca zopfii, was isolated. Two cases recovered by early treating with kanamysin. Serum from the remaining unrecovered case reacted with culture supernatant antigen of the isolate by gel immunodiffusion, and histopathology revealed chronic mastitis with a number of bacteria and severe infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells.
