I examined whether it is possible to use the measurement values with "MIDO METER" as an index of selection for eating quality in rice breeding program. Results are summarized as follows; 1) To confirm the reliability of MIDO METER, some breeding lines were applied repeatedly. In the results of measurements, characteristic values were obtained at each line with less than 3 points of experimental errors. 2) As the condition of samples, 14 to 16 % of moisture content and usage within 3 weeks from sample preparations were desired. 3) Even if the application amount of fertilizer are altered, high equilateral correlation was recognized between MIDO METER value and an actual eating quality. 4) In comparison of F3 and F4 lines of Hanaechizen / Hitomebore, in which each generation was grouped in 3 lines according to their MIDO METER values, good correspondence of values were obtained in the same lines through the generations. This result showing that MIDO METER is usable in the line selection method of breeding. 5) The effect of selection was recognized in progenies at both combinations of Hanaechizen / Hitomebore and Toyama 36 / Hokuriku 162 using the MIDO METER values as an index of individual selection
