Effect of Persimmon Leaves (Diospyros kaki folium) Extract on Serum and Liver Lipid Concentrations in Hypercholesterolemic Rats

This study was performed to investigate the effect of persimmon leaves (Diospyros kaki folium) extract on serum and liver lipid metabolism in rats. Male Sprague Dawley rats were administered to 1% cholesterol and 0.25% sodium cholate to induce hypercholesterolemia and were orally administered on green tea extract (126 mg/kg body weight), persimmon leaves extract 1 (26 mg/kg body weight) and persimmon leaves extract 2 (252 mg/kg body weight) for 5 weeks. In serum and liver, triglyceride concentration was the lowest in green tea extract group and the total-, free cholesterol and cholesteryl ester concentration of persimmon leaves extract 1 group were lower than those of green tea extract group. The liver concentration of free cholesterol in persimmon leaves extract 2 group was less than that in 1 group. However phospholipid concentration was increased in persimmon leaves extract 1 group. Chylomicron-, VLDL- and LDL-cholesterol concentration were lowered in all extract-fed rats. The concentration of VLDL-cholesterol in persimmon leaves extract 2 group was lowered than that in 1 group. The HDL-cholesterol concentration and HDL-C/TC ratio were significantly greater in persimmon leaves extract 1 group than those in green tea and 2 group. Whereas the atherosclerotic inedx (AI) was significantly lowered in persimmon leaves extract administered rats than that in control rats. Our findings suggest that persimmon leaves extract administeration improves lipid metabolism in hypercholesterolemic rats.
