The influence of different watering methods on the growth and flowering of Zantedeschia aethiopica Spr. [Araceae]

Root rot of calla (Zantedeschia aethiopica) caused by Phytophthora richardiae Busisman is the most common and destructive disease in Aichi prefecture. The cultivar of calla has been converted from previous Phytophthora root rot susceptive Childsiana to tolerant Wedding march. But Wedding march is inferior to the previous cultivar in both the quality and yield of cut flowers. Therefore, in order to improve the quality and yield of Wedding march, and avoid Phytophthora root rot, experiments were performed to determine the effects of different watering methods on the growth and flowering of calla. Phytophthora root rot was not caused in the new watering method, planting on the high ridge and watering by subirrigation system using porous rubber tube. Furthermore, the new culture method brought about vigorous growth and was superior to the conventional method watered by a flow irrigation system, in both the yield and quality of cut flowers. The yield of the tolerant Wedding march cut flower was 1.2 - 1.5 times and that of susceptive Childsiana was about 3 times as much as the conventional method. The mean cut flower length of Wedding march was over 15 cm longer and that of Childsiana was over 50 cm longer than the conventional method. No weeds grew on the high ridge of the new culture method, because the surface was dried. Phytophthora was not detected in the soil of the high ridge and the pF value of the soil was 1.9 - 2.0 in summer
