Examination of the mating system of mizunara (Quercus mongolica var. grosseserrata) in a natural stand based on spatial genetic structure and inbreeding depression

In order to elucidate the mating system in a natural Mizunara (Quercus mongolica var. grosseserrata) Stand, the genetic structure of a natural Mizunara stand and the inbreeding depression of this species were examined. Canopy trees and saplings were sampled at a permanent plot (3 ha) in a natural Mizunara stand in central Hokkaido. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to resolve four polymorphic enzyme loci, and the genetic structure in the canopy population was examined using spatial autocorrelation techniques. In neither population of the canopy trees and saplings did the observed numbers of each genotype deviate from the expected numbers given by the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Therefore, it is concluded that these populations were established from random mating: However, a significant patch structure was detected in the canopy trees. The inbreeding depression was examined by comparing two families that had different inbreeding coefficients (F=0 and F=0.25). A comparatively large inbreeding depression was thus found. No evidence of inbreeding was detected in the sapling population; this was thought to be because inbreeding individuals would have high mortality fur inbreeding depression
