Yield and grain quality of oat varieties depending on meteorological conditions in growing period
2001
Zute, S. (State Stende Plant Breeding Station, Stende, Talsu reg. (Latvia))
During the period of vegetation meteorological conditions essentially influence the development of crop and the formation of yield. Ecological comparison of oat varieties, including the recommended cultivars of Latvia, is carried out every year in the State Stende Plant Breeding Station. Yield and grain quality - TGW, test weight, husk content and protein content of oat varieties were tested during 1995 to 2000. It was clarified that about 60% of the crop productivity depended on weather conditions, and only 32.3% on the variety of the crop. The yield level of oat varieties was essentially connected with the average daily temperatures, especially in the period seedling growth (DC 10) - anthesis (DC 69)-r=-0.88, R**2=0.78, y=0.74x+16.03. During the period of vegetation the amount of precipitation favourably influenced the yield of oat varieties (r=0.68). The precipitation considerably influenced TGW of grains (r=0.85). The less fluctuations in the crop yield level were observed in oat "Mara" and "Laima" after six years of research.
