Fairhurst, T. (Potash & Phosphate Institute, East & Southeast Asia Program, 126 Watten Estate Road (Singapore))
A quantitative but low cost approach to calculating nutrient use efficiency in oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is described. The technique relies on non-destructive "allometric" methods and tissue analysis to estiamte respectively the annual biomass production and the nutrient content of component parts. This technique is suitable for use in oil palm fertiliser experiments where a measure of agronomic nutrient efficiency (AE) is required. AE is the product of physiological efficiency (PE) and recovery efficiency (RE). Factors affecting PE and RE are described and remedial measures discussed.
