Polymorphism among Asian rice (Oryza sativa) and African rice (O. glaberrima) species as detected through microsatellite markers

A large number of advanced backcross progenies (introgression lines) have been generated from the crosses of elite breeding lines of Oryza sativa with different accessions of O. glaberrima under IRRI-WARDA [International Rice Research Inst.-West Africa Rice Development Association, Bouake, West Africa] collaborative project. The objectives are to determine introgression using rice microsatellite markers and to transfer tolerance to major biotic (rice yellow mottle virus, African rice gall midge) and abiotic (aluminun toxicity, phosphorus deficiency, drought) stresses from O. glaberrima into high yielding indica rices. The result showed that of the 80 rice microsatellite markers used, 54 were found to be polymorphic between IR64 and the 14 accessions of O. glaberrima. Among the glaberrima accessions, only 30 markers showed polymorphism. None of the 18 markers showed polymorphism in any of the glaberrima accessions
