Detailed morphological account of Solanum melongena var DLP, S. aethiopicum Acc. 2550 and their BC1, BC2, and BC3 progenies were described and compared. Characters of the backcrosses tend toward the cultivated eggplant indicating accumulation of S. melongena genes as the backcross advances. Cytogenetics revealed a chromosome number of 2n=24 in all populations. The normal pairing observed in the backcrosses coupled with high quadrivalent formation (as high as 16.17%) implies homeology in the chromosome of the parental species. Low pollen fertilities in the hybrids (28.2% to 59.55%) were accounted to laggards, bridges, early disjunction and asynchronous movement of the chromosomes
