Preliminary investigation on bacteriological analysis of stored breastmilk from household mothers in peri-urban setting

A total of 30 expressed breastmilk samples were analyzed for bacterial contamination. It was found that Escherichia coli and Staphyloccus spp. were the predominating organisms that were isolated from the stored samples. E. coli was present in 22 samples and fourteen of these isolates yielded positive for fecal coliforms. Staphyloccus spp. was isolated in 18 samples. On the other hand, Bacillus spp. was isolated in four samples and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in two samples. Mixed bacterial contaminations were found to be usually present in single milk sample. Most of the 30 breastmilk samples have initial pH range of 7.5-9.0 at zero hour with tasteless or flat taste and became rancied or acidic. As the pH range to 4.0-5.0, high count of organisms was observed to be most common in stored breastmilk that was kept in room temperature. Likewise, high count of organisms was observed in stored samples kept for twenty-four hours in the freezer and subsequently kept at room temperature for another twenty-four hours
