Comparison between RCBD [randomized complete block design] and alpha (0.1) lattice design in the evaluation of corn genotypes under two nitrogen levels

The use of appropriate experimental design can maximize the accuracy with which genotypes are compared and selected. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the alpha (0.1) lattice design compared with the randomized complete block design (RCBD) in evaluating corn genotypes under two nitrogen (N) levels. Two yield trial experiments with different levels of N were conducted during the 1999-2000 dry season at U.P. Los Banos [Philippines]. Twenty-eight corn hybrids were evaluated under high (-120 kg N/ha) and limited (zero N) N conditions using a 4 x 7 alpha (0.1) lattice design with two replications. Except for the amount of N applied, similar cultural practices were followed in both experiments. In contrast to the RCBD, the lattice design detected significant differences among corn genotypes for yield in both N and limited N experiments. The efficiency of the lattice design over the RCBD for yield was 30% and 58% in the high N and limited N experiments, respectively. The lattice design was more efficient than the RCBD for ear length and ear diameter but comparable with the RCBD for ear and plant heights under high N condition. The lattice design was more efficient than RCBD for all agronomic traits in the zero N experiment. There was an inconsistency in the ranking of the genotypes using unadjusted and adjusted yield means in both experiments. Alpha (0.1) lattice design appears to detect genotypic differences than the RCBD and may improve the efficiency of field evaluation of corn genotypes
