Live and carcass traits of Philippine carabao (Bubalus bubalis Linn.), Philippine carabao x Murrah and Philippine Carabao x Nili Ravi crossbreds

Results of the study showed that among the breedtypes, the PMF1 [Philippine carabao x Murrah] had the highest average liveweight of 480.50 kg while the PC [Philippine Carabao] had the lowest with 343.18 kg. The PMF2 [PMF1 X PMF1] and PRF1 [PC x Ravi] were intermediates in liveweight. The PMF1 had heavier hot carcass (249.54 kg) and chilled carcass (242.96 kg) than the other breedtypes. The four breedtypes had an average of 134.24 kg total slaughter by-products, 49.92% dressing yield, 4.29% slaughtering loss and 2.85% chilling loss. The carcass of PMF1 had the highest percent lean and lowest percent fat than the other breedtypes. The carcass of PMF1 had the highest chilled carcass weight, highest percent lean, lowest percent fat and bone than the other breedtypes. The percent lean in the carcass increased (r = 0.554) while the percent fat (r = -.444) decreased as the carabaos get heavier. The percent fat in the carcass tended to increase (r = 0.388) as the carabaos get older. The PMF1 had the highest estimated sale of Ph P18,644.89 per head, while PC had the lowest with Ph P12,586.45. The PMF1 had the highest estimated sale per kilogram liveweight of Ph P38.80 while PRF1 had the lowest with Ph P36.52. The crossbreds Philippine Murrah F1 and F2 therefore, can give higher monetary value to the farmer out of slaughter and carcass yields, and with almost the same meat quality with the PC. The Phil. Murrah crossbreds have genetic potential to grow in a faster rate than the PC, thus they can reach the optimum slaughter weight in a much shorter time or younger age expecting a relatively tender meat and less amount of trimmable fats
