Despite extensive taxonomic work on Philippine corals by Nemenzo (1986), those from Negros Oriental were not included. Up until now, detailed accounts of scleractinian species have been available for only one site in the province. This study aimed to provide a more comprehensive account of the distribution of scleractinian species in Negros Oriental. During a programme aiming to support the establishment of marine reserves in the province, corals were identified to species level. More than 20 sites, including most existing and planned marine reserves, were visited. Identification of coral specimens was conducted preferably in situ, using SCUBA or close-up photography. However, since 200 scleractinian species were recorded in the reef of Apo Island alone, the total number for the entire province is expected to be considerably higher. The distribution of coral species along the 300 km coastline will be presented and discussed within the context of the known records of scleractinians in the Philippines
