Complex three-dimensional coral structures were simplified into standardized growth forms (Veron 1986). For each growth form, a surface area index (SI) was computed. The main objective of this study was to derive a surface index that, when used in combination with the projected area, would result into the approximate three-dimensional area of a coral colony exhibiting a certain growth form. For example, SI for massive forms (hemispherical) was calculated from the equation: actual or 3-dimensional area (2 pr2) divided by the projected or two dimensional area (pr2) (Dahl 1973). The resulting SI is 2 for massive forms. Surface area index for other standard forms of corals are currently being developed
