Artificial infestation of Lepidosaphes ulmi (L.) (Diaspididae: Hemiptera): A new rearing technique of mussel scale on apple fruit
1998
Ahmad, K.F. (University Coll. of Agriculture, Rawalakot (Pakistan). Dept. of Entomology)
Mussel scale Lepidosaphes ulmi (L.) was successfully reared on apple fruit (especially cv. Granny Smith) under insectary conditions in an artificial infestation and provided some preliminary information. Greater number of adult gravid female were recorded from apple Granny Smith than on MacIntosh. Most of the adults gravid female scales collected near the calyx area, were overcrowded than sparsely present on their outer region of the apple. A significant relation was found between the body measurements and the number of the eggs laid by L. uImi with respect to the apple cultivars. Almost all the scales collected from the apple MacIntosh were devoid of eggs (except very few) than Granny Smith. For future laboratory experiments, apple Granny Smith could be a best suitable source for artificial infestation of L. uImi.
