A set of 4 x 4 diallel cross was evaluated for heterosis and combining ability for important agronomic traits of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum). Plant height, number of tillers per plant , number of spiklets per spike, number of grains per spike and grain yield per plant were significantly different at (P greater than equal to 0.01) which indicated great genetic variation among both the populations. The highest positive MP heterosis of 77.62% level was recorded in the hybrid Pavon x C 591 and the highest heterobeltiosis of 62.02% level was obtained in cross Jauhar 78 x Pavon for the trait grain yield per plant whereas its reciprocal cross Pavon x Jauhar 78 displayed maximum heterosis in tillers per plant and grains per spike. Variance for combining ability indicated dominant and additive gene effects in most of the characters. The parental variety C591 displayed maximum GCA effects in plant height (5.85 cm). Present findings provided promising results for the exploitation of heterosis and combining ability in the varietal development programmes involving these genotypes.
