Fertilization and environment: the case of rice
2000
Santos, J.Q. dos
A brief commen about the interest of rice and some critics concerning its possible effect on environmental degradation are presented. A comparative study between rice and other crops on the potential pollution caused by fertilizers is made. According with present knowledge the fertilization of rice has a lower impact on the environment than other crops. In fact, lowland rice does not need organic and rarely mineral amendments. Furthermore its demands of nutrients are small and so are the amounts of mineral fertilizers applied. In conclusion, growth factors such as pesticides, irrigation water and fertilizers have to be correctly appliedin order to obtain high yields and economic return from rice without environmental degradation
