Our article focuses on a description of the new subassociation Omphalodo-Fagetum (Tregubov 1957) Marincek et al. 1993 rhododendretosum hirsuti (Urbancic et al. 1979 nom. nud.) subass. nova, as found on the Trnovski gozd plateau, in forest reserve on the northern slopes of the Golaki range (western Slovenia). Its natural forest stands are little influenced by man, and grow on an organogenic soil of steep, rocky and shady slopes at altitude of between 1250 and 1350 metres above sea level. This soil is predominantly composed of moder rendzina, the international classification for this kind of rendzina being Folic Histosols (FAO 1989, 1998). According to its ecology and floristic composition, the subassociation described is one of the most extreme forms of the association Omphalodo-Fagetum. We have established striking similarities with the pre-Alpine and Alpine fir-beech forest with Hairy Alpenrose (Homogyno sylvestris-Fagetum Marincek et al. 1993 rhododendretosum hirsuti) in the Julian Alps.
