New soybean cultivar Chakkrabhandhu no.1

Soybean accessions UFV 80-85 was developed by The University Federal Vicoja in Brazil. Later, it had been brought to Australia where it was officially released to farmers in 1987 by the name of Leichhardt. Leichhardt was brought to Thailand in 1990 with other Brazillian soybean lines by Australia scientists who worked in a collaborative program with Thai scientists in a project called "Soybean Improvement Project" jointly funded by Australian. Leichhardt and other 79 soybean lines had been tested in a preliminary yield trial conducted at 8 locations and three consecutive seasons. Result of the study revealed that soybean cultivar Leichhardt produced much higher yield than cultivar Chiang Mai 60, S.J.5 and Sukhothai no.1 in early rainy season and dry season. Leichhardt is more suitable to the central plain and northeastern areas in Thailand. However, it is not recommended for late rainy season planting for this cultivar may loss its resistant to bacterial pustule disease. Resistant of Leichhardt to antracnose, rust and other foliar diseases has been high. In an on-farm trials conducted in the north, northeast and central plain, Leichhardt outyield Chiang Mai 60 and S.J.5 in the early and dry season. In 1996 dry season, the average yield of Leichhardt were 5.5 and 4.8 percent higher than Chiang Mai 60 and S.J.5 respectively. Chemical analysis of seed composition revealed that Leichhardt contain 22.5 percent oil and 41.3 percent protein. Oil content in the seed of Leichhardt is subsequently higher than those found in cultivar Chiang Mai 60. As soybean cultivar Leichhardt is suitable for cultivation in Thailand, we propose to release this cultivar officially to Thai farmers. In order to honour Prince Chakkrabhandhu Pensiri, we wish to give Thai name to the cultivar "Leichhardt" as "Chakkrabhandhu no.1".
