Application of point sampling in forest inventory was done in Mae Ngao demonstration forest, sector Mae Huad, Lampang province by comparing results from point sampling and plot sampling techniques. Point sampling used a relascope with basal area factor (BAF) 1 to 10. Plot sampling was done using a fixed area plot of 0.1 hectares, the center of which was also used for point sampling. Basal area and volume within plots, average volume within diameter classes and average number of trees within diameter classes were compared. In total 290 sampling plots were inventoried, each forest type contained the following: mixed deciduous forest, 166; dry dipterocarp forest, 32; dry evergereen forest, 20; and teak plantation, 72. The results showed that in dry dipterocarp forest and teak plantations there were no significant differences between the smpling techniques when BAF values ranged from 2 to 10. In mixed deciduous forest differences were found in basal area and volume ranged than 7. In dry evergreen forest differences were found in basal are and volume when BAF values were less than 3; when diameter classes were analyzed in this forest type volume results displayed differences at all BAF values and the number of trees showed differences at BAF values 8 to 10. Comparision of unstratified forest types (290 sampling plots) showed significant differences in basal area and volume when BAF value were less than 8. From this study it can be recommended that the following BAF values are utilized Mixed deciduous forest BAF 8; dry dipterocarp forest, dry evergreen forest and teak plantation BAF 3. For inventories in unstratified forest types BAF 8 is recommended. The optimum number of sample points for each of the mentioned forest types is 311, 88, 82, 137 and 248 respectively.
