Provenance trials of Casuarina equisetifolia planted on tin-mine lands
1998
Ploenchit Chumreang
Study on the 11-provenance variations of Casuarina equisetifolia was carried out at Amphoe Takuapa, Changwat Phangnga by using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 4 replications. The trail plots were divided by soil characteristics due to tin mining : sandy zone, gravel zone, massive zone and no mine zone of lateritic soil. Growth performances, including height, dbh, survival percentage; anatomical characteristics, frequency and size of vessel; and some physiological characteristics, e.g., diurnal and seasonal variation of water potential, and stomatal conductance were investigated. Wigh an exception of vessel size, all parameters had no significant differences among provenances, However, all variables were found to be highly significant among trial plots. The diurnal variation of water potential and stomatal conductance varied with provenances and showed significantly different between summer and rainy seasons. In addition, the current results showed that the maximum values of water potential and stomatal conductance occured during 6.00-8.00 am., then declined reaching the minimum during 14.00-16.00 pm. The average height, bdh, and survival precentage of Casuarina equisetifolia at 5 years and 4 months old were of 5.96 m, 4.77 cm, and 59.32 percent, respectively. The average water potential measured during the rainy season and summer were of -1.52 and -1.88 MPa, respectively. The average stomatal conductance measured during the rainy season and summer were of 0.340 and 0.143 mol/square m/s, respectively. Anatomical study revealed that the vessel size was 83.4 micro m and the vessel frequency was 18.7 vessels/square mm. Based on the present study it could be concluded that the top-three provenances to be selected for tin-mine site were provenance no. 18119 (India), 18299 (Songkhla) and 18157 (Malaysia), respectively.
