Study on socio-economic condition and the intention to change occupation of fishery cooperative members in the eastern seaboard area

Result show that 74 percent have had more than 10 years of fishng experiences. Most of them own only one small boat. The small boats are limited only for coastal fishing. Due to the small power and size, the main fishing tools are fish trap fishhook ring net fish net. The major fishing products caught are squids fish crab and keei. For each harvest, fishery cooperative members earn ranging form 1,704-10,538 baht while the cost for each trip are between 2,214-2,517 baht. Hene, they incure losses accationlly due to small catch. All harvests are sold to local merchants. Most of the fishery cooperative members purchase fishing materials and equipment from the merchants although some of them buy from cooperative, The main problems encountered by the fishery cooperative members are the degradation of fishery resources; the disturbance of large trawlers, the lack of credit availability. Assistants needs must one, low interest loans, the improvement of fishing zone, cheap materials and equipment and measures to prevent damages of fishing equipment form the large trawlers. Thirty-one percent of fishery cooperative members indicate their preference to change occupation. The interesting occupations to them are agriculture, operating glocery store and employed-labour. In contrast, forty-four percent of them do not want to change the occupation with the reasons that they love are more familiar with fishery occupation. The results of hypothesis testing indicate that the factors affecting decision in occupational change are age, education level, the experiences in fishing as well as in other occupations.
