Degradation of povidone-iodine and its toxicity to Vibrio spp. and black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius) larvae

Degradation of povidone-iodine at 5, 10 and 20 mg/l in distilled water 0.85 percent saline, 3 percent saline and 30 ppt sea water were investigated. The results revealed that it took 24, 21, 21, 12 hrs for 5 mg/l; 33, 27, 27, 18 hrs for 10 mg/l and 42, 36, 33, 24 hrs for 20 mg/l to completely degrade, respectively. The shortest degrading time is in 30 ppt sea water and the longest is in distilled water. The influencing factors on the degradation of povidone-iodine are aeration, salinity, light and temperature. Efficacy study of povidone-iodine on 48 isolates of Vibrio spp. including Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, V. damsela, V. alginolyticus, V. fluvialis, V. cholerae and V. harveyi indicated that all isolates of each species were killed within 30 minutes at the range of 1.5625-3.125, 12.5, 1.5625-3.125, 6.25-12.5, 1.5625-12.5, 1.5625-6.25 and 3.125-6.25 mg/l, respectively. Acute toxicity test of povindone-iodine on black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius) postlarval stage 15 revealed the LC50 24 hrs at 17.0 (15.125-19.108) mg/l with slope function of 1.307 (1.216-1.405). Povidone-iodine had no significant impact on water qualities including dissolved oxygen, pH, total ammonia and nitrite.
