Study of wastewater treatment of Kasetsart University dairy plant by Sequencing Batch Reactor
1995
Suchat Leungprasert
Kasetsart University Dairy Plant produces fresh milk and yoghurt. Its production capacity is 12 tons/d, having the average wastewater flowrate of 65.31 cubic m/d with BOD5, COD and suspended solids of 3,319, 4,767.63 and 1,234 mg/l, respectively, and the BOD k-rate was 0.065 per day. Using Sequencing Batch Reactor system for wastewater treatment in the range of HRT 1.5-8.0 days, its was found that the observed yield (Y) was 0.049, decay rate (kd) was 0.047, net growth rate was 0.00251 and the maximum specific growth rate (micro m) was 0.248 per day. The substrate utilization (Ks) in dairy wastewater was 1.761 mg/l and the ratio of BOD:COD was between 0.21-0.96 and 0.69 on the average. In this experiment the time for time filling, aerating, settling and drawing 12, 20, 3 and 1 hours, respectively in which the filling and aeration were started at the same time. The optimum result in terms of HRT, volumetric loading, F/M ratio, oxygen uptake rate and SVI, which is defined as the maximum organic matter destroyed were 5.0 days, 0.929 kgBOD/cubic m-d, 0.226 kgBOD/MLVSS-d, 11.45 mgO2/MLVSS-hr. and 155.3 respectively. The efficiency of COD, BOD, SS, TKN and TP removals were 99.33, 99.89, 99.78, 95.89 and 81.63 percent respectively. The effluent BOD:COD was 0.131 and effluent BOD5 was less than 20 mg/l.
