The efficiency of different crossing methods in the breeding of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare)

The aim of this investigation was the determination of the most efficient crossing method among six examined methods. Genotypes obtained by single, two way, three way, successive cross, back cross and converging cross in the same continual pedigree method of selection were compared. Fortyseven genotypes (varieties and lines) were grown in 1997 and 1998 at two locations. Following parameters were analyzed: plant height, the resistance of plants to leaf rust and downy mildew, seed yield, protein content, sedimentation value, milling ratio and bread value. In general, single cross is the most efficient crossing method in wheat breeding for increased yield per se, but in wheat breeding for improved quality and disease resistance multiple crossing methods are expected to be more efficient in creating superior genotypes.
