Female line Ha-26, developed from the Russian variety Armovirski-3497, is genetically distant from most of the restorers that have thus far been developed around the world. Because of its genetic divergence, this line is characterized by high GCA (general combining ability) and SCA (special combining ability) values for the two most important agronomic characters (seed yield and oil yield). In addition, the line is tolerant to Phomopsis and can therefore be used to develop hybrids tolerant to this pathogen. For these reasons, Ha-26 is used for the development of highly productive joint hybrids in a large number of breeding institutions world-wide. Line Ha-26 has been used to develop a number of hybrids in several European countries, including Yugoslavia. Also, several Ha-26-based hybrids are being or about to be tested in official trials for registration purposes.
