The biotransfer of a particular total content of heavy metals can vary widely in dependance on chemical and physical soil properties, climate conditions and plant species parameters. Transfer factor (TF) is often used in the scientific literature as measure for the biotransfer of heavy metals. The transfer factor represent the quotient of concentration (mg/kg dry matter) in the soil. A comparation of the transfer factor for various species/varieties of plants in meaningful only if all other conditional are equal. He provides information on whether or not a certain species of plant preferentially takes up a certain element and accumulates more of it than the soil (TF1) or whether the uptake is significantly lower than or insignificant compared with the soil content (TF1).
