We studied yield and dry matter quality in four-year trial carried out with 10 alfalfa varieties - five Yugoslav (NS Mediana ZMS V, NS Novosadjanka H-11, NS Slavija, Krusevacka K-1, and the experimental variety Lovcenac) and five foreign ones (Mirna and Vuka from Croatia, Debarska from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Vernal from the U.S., and Europe from France). Analyzed in the study were dry matter yield, crude protein content (CP), crude cellulose content (CC), fatty substance content (FSC), mineral substance content (MSC), and nitrogen-free extractive substance percentage (NES). During the 1991-1994 period, the highest dry matter yields were produced by the varieties NS Mediana ZMS V (19.8 t/ha), Debarska (19.7 t/ha), Lovcenac (19.5 t/ha), and K-1 (19.4 t/ha). The highest crude protein contents were recorded in the varieties NS-Slavija (19.96%) and Vuka (19.49%). The varieties NS-Slavija (23.25%) and Vuka (23.62%) were characterized by a low crude cellulose content.
