The paper shows results of research on archaeological excavations of timber from the Gradina site (Serbia, Yugoslavia). This locality belongs to medieval area Ras, epitomizing the first Serbian state of Nemanjic. The fossil wood samples are anatomically determined, and the area established to have been populated in Middle Ages mostly by double-needled pines (Pinus sylvestris L. and Pinus nigra Arn.)
