Cyathostominae rank with the most frequently occurring parasites of horses. Although a number of wide-spectre anthelmintics are available, the parasites can be detected in each herd and each horse, because larvae are highly resistant to environmental factors and survive on pastures and in litter for very long periods. Cyathostominae do not induce serious lesions, but can cause debilitation manifested by poor condition, and are considered the most frequent cause of colic. In local conditions, horses are dewormed usually in spring and autumn, but the effect is questionable. Current systems of prophylaxis and new epidemiological approaches are described and the risk of developing resistance to anthelmintics is pointed out.
