Relations between sources of nutrients and requirements on their removal from wastewaters are discussed in this article. Phosphorus is the main nutrient contributing to eutrophication. The main sources of phosphorus pollution are fertilizers, manure and washing-powders. Phosphorus and in some cases also nitrogen pollution may be reduced as follows: 1) by diminishing the concentration of phosphorus in washing-powders; 2) by rational utilization of fertilizers; 3) by chemical or biological removal of nutrients from wastewaters.
