We performed a haematological examination of 81 great tits (Parus major) from Brno, Czech Republic, in winter 2000/2001. The examination of 80 healthy birds yielded the following results: 5.89 +/- 1.36 x 10**6 /microL erythrocytes, 4.06 +/- 2.4 x 10**3 /microL leukocytes (68.5 % of lymphocytes, 19.6 % of heterophils, 5.6 % of eosinophils, 5.6 % of basophils, 1.0 % of monocytes), haemoglobin concentration: 173.2 +/- 29.9 g/L, packed cells volume 45 +/- 4 %. We found anaemia, leukocytosis and parasites of the species Leucocytozoon dubreuili in the blood of an injured great tit having its leg amputated. In 3 healthy birds we distinguished blood parasites of the genus Leucocytozoon, in one bird also some microfilariae (in all cases, there was 1 parasite per 10**5 of erythrocytes).
