The dynamics and the character of harvest rates in Estonia during the last decade of the 20th century

During the last ten years the harvest rate increased drastically in Estonia, raised from 2,4 million cubic meters in 1993 to 10,8 million cubic meters in 2000. The authorities are not concerned because the area and the total volume of Estonian forests are big enough. An analysis shows that harvest intensity was relatively stable in the managed forests. The increase in harvest rate was due to the land reform. In state forests, the average harveswas 3.6 cbm/ha; in other forests it was 10.1 cbm/ha. Probbably, the total harvest rate will increase because of the ongoing privatization process. Comparing the harvest rate with the available increment shows overuse of timber in Estonia. In several key tree species, the situation is worse than the average, since in 2000 spruce was harvested 280 per cent and pine 130 per cent of the available increment, whereas the respevtive figure was 68 per cent for aspen and for gray alder 36 per cent
