The large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis L., in the felling areas of the Raepina forest district: a case study with baited ground traps

This paper presents the results of a 12-year (1989-2000) monitoring of the population of the large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis L., in an intensively managed forest area of the forest district of Raepina, South Estonia, using pitfall traps baited with turpentine and ethanol. In total, 41,151 weevils were trapped on clear-cut areas of various ages. Seasonal and yearly variations in the population of H. abietis were studied. During recent years, felling intensity in Estonian forests has increase considerably. In the study area, several clear-cut plots had been established within a range of 2-3 km, which led to rapid increase of the weevil's population. The average number of catches per trap increased drastically on newly clear-cut plots but the population levels were also high in the subsequent years when new clearings were established in close neighbourhood. On some clear-cut plots pine weevils were abundant even 6-7 years after felling
