An ecological swinery model for organic pork production

European Union Council Regulation No 1804/1999 supplementing Regulation No 2092/91 on organic production of agricultural products was established in summer 1999. The Ministry of Agriculture in Finland released the corresponding national regulations for organic farming and animal husbandry in August 2000. It defines the production demands of animal welfare, forage and husbandry environments. The Agrifood Research Centre has developed an ecological swinery model which fulfils the criteria of the environmental demands of organic pork production. The model is a combination swinery for 35 sows and 168 fattening pigs
