Conservation of plant genetic resources in the gene bank of the Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute

Until 1993 the plant genetic resources for food and agriculture were preserved at the Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute as a plant breeders' working collections. As there were no facilities for long-term storage at the Jogeva PBI, the material especially the unique varieties and advanced breeding lines of Estonian origin, were under the serious threat of loss. The Jogeva PBI in co-operation with the Nordic Gene Bank undertook purposeful activities for preservation of plant genetic resources in 1994. The necessary equipment for ex situ conservation was contributed to the Jogeva PBI within the framework of the Nordic-Baltic Project, and, thus, the Gene Bank of the Jogeva PBI was set up in 1999. The gene Bank preserves currently 566 advanced cultivars and breeding lines of 33 plant species. 95 varieties are of Estonian origin. The Gene Bank of the Jogeva PBI has set up following goals for the next decades: development of an optimal set of descriptors for characterisation of accessions, advancment of the co-operation with the breeders for evaluation of accessions, continuation of the evaluation of breeders working collections for determantion and utilization of the most valuable accessions and continuation of co-operation with other holders of plant genetic resources
