Comparative proximate composition of organic and conventionally managed ryegrass/white clover pasture

Differences in the chemical composition of organic and conventionally produced ryegrass/white clover pasture was assessed at SAC-Aberdeen. There was no significant difference (p0.05) in the dry matter percentage (DM%) of both systems. There was significant difference (P0.001) in the crude protein (cP) and Lipid (EE) concentration between the two pasture systems. The level of both CP and Lipid was higher in the conventional system than in the organic system by about 20% and 14% respectively. The level of these nutrients decline in both systems with progressing time. there was no significant difference (P0.05) in the MADF and ash concentration respectively between the systems, but the level of both nutrients in both systems increased through time. Even though the chemical composition of organically husbanded pasture was less than that of conventional system, the values in this work agree with that reported by McDonald et al. (1988). Therefore, the proximate composition of organically produced herbage has no negative implication on organic livestock farming.
