The cabbage identification factor (CIF) is the most powerful stimulant chemical known for the cabbage root fly, Delia radicum. The amounts of CIF present on the leaf surfaces of 19 different plant species were quantified using electrophysiological recording of a tarsal sensillum of the fly. These data were compared with the oviposition preferences of the fly for the plant species. The results indicated that knowledge about the CIF content of plant leaf is of a limited value for the prediction of the fly's behavioural activity
