We present preliminary results from a mutation accumulation experiment on Triticum durum. Five hundred lines, derived from a single fixed genotype, were maintained using a singleseed descent procedure whereby each sub-line contributes exactly one offspring to the next generation. After seven generations, a random sample of 135 lines was assayed in a common garden experiment along with 60 control lines. Estimates of the mutational heritability (mutational variance standardized by the environmental variance) for heading date as well as simple yield components are found to be on the order of 0.01. We find that mutations deteriorate productivity (total number of seeds produced) with mean homozygous effect s= -0.2 and arise at a rate U=0.05 (per haploid genome)
