In order to know the importance and control methods of insect pests in upland rice, a survey was conducted during August to September 1998. The survey used RRA method in Sitiung which was the center of upland rice planting area in West Sumatra. The result showed that, in general, insect pests problem was not so important in the upland rice production system. Insect pests found on upland rice in West Sumatra were: soil-inhabiting pests (ants, white, grub, and mole-crickets), seedling fly, leaf roller, stem borers, and seed suckers (rice bug and green sting bug). Among them, seed suckers were the most important ones, and followed by soil-inhabiting insect pests. Cultural practices (early planting, tillage, crop rotation, synchronous planting) and chemical control were done in controlling these insect pests
