Effect of potassium levels (25, 50, 100 and 200 ppm) on the water relations, CO2 assimilation, enzyme activities and plant performance under soil moisture deficits at vegetative, flowering and pod development stages were studied in clusterbean. The decline in leaf relative water content and plant water potential due to water stress were less in plants grown at 200 ppm K. Water stress drastically reduced the rate of net photosynthesis at all growth stages at all K level but photosynthetic rates were relatively higher, both in control and stressed plant at 200 ppm K level. The activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase generally increased while glutamate dehydrogenase activity decreased with increasing K levels. The detrimental effects of water stress on yield of clusterbean were markedly less at higher K levels. It is concluded that K application helped plants in maintaining favourable internal tissue water and metabolic activities under water stress.
